Basic Human Needs (BHN) – Indian Children’s Development Society was founded on a simple but powerful belief: when a child's basic human needs are met, they have a better opportunity to learn, grow and break the cycle of poverty.
We believe that every child deserves more than simply the chance to survive. Every child deserves access to education, nutritious food, safe shelter, healthcare and, above all, the care and support needed to build a brighter future.
BHN is a non-profit organisation based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, supporting grassroots schools and community programmes in Varanasi, India. Our work focuses on helping marginalised children and families living in poverty, including disadvantaged and homeless street children.
Our Mission
Our mission is to help relieve poverty and create opportunities for children and families by supporting initiatives that provide:

We believe that education can be one of the most powerful ways to change a child's future. By supporting children throughout their educational journey, we hope to give them the knowledge, confidence and opportunities they need to create a better life for themselves and their communities.
Supporting Children in Varanasi
BHN supports grassroots schools in Varanasi that provide free schooling, housing, medical care and food for marginalised street children.
Through our support, children can access educational opportunities that may otherwise be unavailable to them. We also help provide essential resources and support learning environments where children can develop and thrive.
More Than Education
Education is vital, but a child cannot learn and thrive when they are hungry, unwell or without a safe place to live.
That is why BHN's work goes beyond the classroom. We support programmes that help provide food, shelter, accommodation and access to medical care for children and families who may otherwise struggle to afford these essential services.
