Brief info

Jessica began her career as an English teacher in Taiwan, where she had built a comfortable life and was earning a good living. But after witnessing the circumstances faced by vulnerable children in India, she made a life-changing decision: she left behind the security of her teaching career and dedicated herself to helping children living in poverty in Varanasi.

She went on to found Basic Human Needs (BHN), an organisation created to support some of Varanasi's most marginalised children. What began with a desire to help children living on the streets has grown into a much broader programme providing education, food, shelter, medical care and, perhaps most importantly, a safe and caring environment in which children can grow and develop.

Today, Basic Human Needs supports grassroots educational programmes in Varanasi, including schooling for children who might otherwise have little or no access to education. The organisation also supports children as they progress into secondary education and college, while helping provide essential food, healthcare and accommodation where needed.
Basic Human Needs

Jessica's story is ultimately one of choosing purpose over comfort. She gave up a secure life in Taiwan to devote herself to children who had very little, and over the years that decision has grown into an organisation helping give those children something fundamental: the opportunity to have an education, a future and a childhood
